Abstract:

Introduction: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited hemoglobinopathy characterized by the presence of abnormal hemoglobin S, which polymerizes under deoxygenated conditions within the microcirculation. This process leads to the formation of sickle-shaped red blood cells, resulting in vaso-occlusion, chronic hemolytic anemia, impaired oxygen delivery, and progressive multi-organ damage.

Objective: The main aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a community-based health education intervention on the determinants and uptake of preconception screening for SCT among adults of the reproductive age in the Buea Health District Cameroon.

Materials and Methods: The study will adopt a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design with an embedded quasiexperimental component, implemented in four interlinked phases. Each phase corresponded to a distinct study design aligned with specific objectives and hypotheses.

Results: There will be increase uptake of preconception screening for SCT and increase knowledge among adults of the reproductive age group in the Buea health district.

Conclusion: Integrating preconception education and screening for SCT into routine community and primary healthcare services can enhance informed reproductive decision-making and support the long-term prevention of sickle cell disease.
