Abstract:

Background: In resource-constrained settings like Northeast Nigeria, administrative bottlenecks and manual paper-based filing systems often lead to critical delays in healthcare delivery. At the Gamboru Primary Hospital in Maiduguri, excessive patient wait times were identified as a primary barrier to accessing maternal health and HIV/AIDS services. This project aimed to implement a digital workflow redesign to optimize patient flow and improve clinical efficiency.

Methods: As part of the Northeast Health Network initiative, we conducted an operational audit to identify specific "choke points" in the patient journey. We transitioned from a manual record-keeping system to a digital "re-routing" model. This involved digitizing patient registration, implementing a real-time queue management system, and training clinical staff on data-driven administrative protocols to prioritize high-risk maternal and infectious disease cases.

Results: Within the first six months of implementation, the digital workflow optimization resulted in a 25% reduction in average patient wait times. Data showed an increase in daily patient throughput without a corresponding increase in staff burnout. Furthermore, patient satisfaction scores improved significantly, particularly among those seeking time-sensitive HIV screenings and prenatal care.

Conclusions: The success at Gamboru Primary Hospital demonstrates that digital administrative interventions are a highly effective, low-cost strategy for improving health access in conflict-affected regions. This "Efficiency Model" is scalable and provides a blueprint for other primary healthcare centers across Africa to transition from manual to tech-enabled systems, ensuring that clinical time is maximized for patient care rather than paperwork.
