Abstract:

Background: Population and community health strategies are central to improving health outcomes in rural and peri-urban settings. In Nyakach Sub-county, Kisumu County, persistent challenges such as limited health literacy, workforce shortages, and inadequate community engagement hinder the effectiveness of public health interventions. Strengthening education, training, and workforce development is essential to empower communities and health professionals in addressing preventable diseases and promoting resilience.

Objective: To assess the role of public health education and workforce development in enhancing population and community health strategies in Nyakach Sub-county.

Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in Nyakach Sub-county between July and September 2025. The study population included community health workers, local leaders, and residents accessing services at primary health facilities. A sample of 150 community members aged 16–60 years was selected using cluster sampling, alongside 20 health workers and 10 local leaders purposively included. Data were collected using household surveys to assess health literacy and service access, observation checklists to evaluate preventive practices, and group discussions to explore perceptions of health strategies. Ethical approval was obtained, and confidentiality was maintained. Quantitative data were analyzed using STATA v18 for descriptive summaries and simple correlations, while qualitative data were summarized into key themes.

Results: Findings revealed that 40% of community members had limited knowledge of preventive health practices, including sanitation, nutrition, and maternal-child health. Workforce shortages were evident, with only 60% of health facilities having trained community health workers. Community health strategies were inconsistently implemented due to inadequate training, limited resources, and weak collaboration between health workers and local leaders. However, where health education programs were active, there was improved uptake of preventive services and stronger community participation in health initiatives.

Conclusion: Public health education and workforce development are critical to strengthening population and community health strategies in Nyakach Sub-county. Expanding training programs for health workers, integrating community-based health education campaigns, and fostering partnerships with local leadership will enhance health literacy and service delivery. These interventions will contribute to sustainable improvements in community health outcomes and resilience.
